A group of people called les indignes de Bruxelles protest
Have a look at this series of photos shot in Brussels during the anti kapitalist protests.
Who are the ‘indignés’
The 'indignés' in Brussels refer to a movement inspired by the global wave of protests against social injustice and political corruption, rooted primarily in the 2011 Spanish protests. Members of this movement advocate for more participatory democracy, economic equity, and an end to austerity measures, rallying against the perceived disconnect between politicians and the general populace. In the heart of Brussels, they gather to voice their concerns, encourage civic engagement, and create a sense of community among those dissatisfied with the current state of affairs. Their gatherings often blend passion and creativity, reflecting a blend of idealism and the desire for tangible change in society.
On shooting protests as a photojournalist
To photograph a rally or protest professionally, I always start by arriving early to scout the location and identify optimal angles and vantage points. Most of the time I use a fast shutter speed to capture the movement and energy of the event, while being mindful of the changing light conditions. Focusing on emotional expressions and interactions among participants, as these candid moments often count in telling the visual story. In the meanwhile I am aware of my surroundings and I stay informed about the event’s dynamics to anticipate any developing moments and capture them as they unfold. I photographed many protests over the years and I find this fascinating. Right wing, Left wing human rights, local protests, in Brussels there is a protest almost every day. This is a great opportunity for training the eye and speed of a photographer. Often there are many other photographer too, so it is a challenge to make that one shot that does great in print.
Lately, I must say, there have been several protests that have escalated with lots of aggression and increasing violence. During the challenging times of COVID, I took precautions and started wearing a helmet and even, on occasion, a gas mask to certain protests to protect myself. It's unfortunate that sometimes this violence also seems to be directed towards journalists who are just doing their job.
